Top 10 Halloween Home and Family Safety Tips from PHT

While Halloween is all about ghouls and goblins, it’s our job at PHT to make sure that no scary monsters get inside your home. Halloween is known to be one of the top nights of the year for home intrusions and mischievous pranks. We’ve compiled a list of the top Halloween home and family safety tips to ensure all of your minions, princesses and pirates (and their candy stashes) stay safe this Halloween!

  1. Check all treats before eating (it’s ok to pull out a few of your favorites, we won’t tell!).
  2. Light up the night - make sure your kids have fluorescent sticks or flashlights so that they are easily recognized by vehicles, use spotlights or motion sensor lights around the house and keep driveways and walkways visible for kids.
  3. Host your own Halloween gathering or stage an outdoor giveaway so that all candy/show is outside on a well-lit front yard. NO ONE goes in the house!
  4. Light up your home with festive decorations or even just your porch light or a small lamp inside to make it look like you are there; make sure the backyard is well lit too!
  5. If you’re going out, try to leave a car in the driveway or in your garage if it has windows. This is a great way to protect your home from intruders as studies show that this is one of the things burglars look for to see if anyone might be home.
  6. Know your route, your children’s route and expected surroundings.
  7. Wear makeup instead of a mask; masks can limit visibility!
  8. Reinforce knowledge for kids NOT to get in a car unless it is you driving.
  9. Respect street signalization. While people have right of way, Halloween is crazy and we must respect cars on the road as they can still hurt people!
  10. Make sure your doors and windows are locked, and that your garage is closed at all times, whether you are home or not. This is the easiest way to prevent intruders from entering your home! If you’re setting up outside, keep your key on you or decide on a time to close or lock house doors for the night.

And most importantly of all, engage your security system! Don’t have one? Fill out our contact form or call (844) PHT-SAFE today!
